The novel "The Red Badge of Courage" by Stephen Crane talks about what it means to be a man even when one has made mistakes.

    Explanation:

Throughout this war novel by the American author Crane, the author seems to focus only on accepting one's mistakes and using this acceptance to become humble. We get a glimpse at the end of the novel where he writes about the soldiers' quietness. This he writes in contrast to the "rumors of noise and bravado" at the starting of the book.

Crane even dwells on the soldiers' ability to fight facing fear which seems to him that this is what is meant by being a man. The theme of manhood finds expression in the novel.

At an early age, the conceptions of manhood are simplistic, romantic and full of adolescent fantasies but as one matures the measure of manhood depends on negotiating one's mistakes and responsibilities than in one's conduct on the battlefield. This is the realisation that is conveyed.
