Fresh water is naturally occurring water on the Earth 's surface in ice sheets, ice caps, glaciers, icebergs, bogs, ponds, lakes, rivers and streams, and underground as groundwater in aquifers and underground streams.

The fresh water on earth is cycled around by the Hydrologic Cycle. The main freshwater storage systems are glaciers, ice, groundwater, ponds, lakes, etc. The water travels to these pooling bodies of water by creeks, rivers, streams and runoff from melting snow and ice.

Some of the water eventually makes it to the ocean by the same transportation of the streams and rivers OR by precipitation (rain/snow) from clouds. About 80% of the earth is covered in water. The majority of this being the oceans that surround our continents.

While most precipitation falls into the oceans/lakes, it also accumulates as snow on mountains, or is absorbed by the ground. When there's enough, there is groundwater, and groundwater flow follows the gravity's pull downwards, eventually pooling in a dip where two hills meet ... like a valley. This is the cause of the formation of most bogs, ponds, etc.
