Last autumn, he came back home from the East.

He tends to reserve judgment about people.

He wants the world to stand at moral attention.

In this opening of the book, Nick tells us more about his personality and how he makes decisions rather than his history. The first two answers we see when he says, " When I came back from the East last autumn I felt that I wanted the world to be in uniform and at a sort of moral attention." Also in the second paragraph he states, "In consequence, I'm inclined to reserve all judgments." He talks about how his father raised him to be this way stating that not everyone has had the privileges he has been born into.
