Grandma Dee is very major icon though she does not shows up in the story. Maggie is very fond of the quilts as they make her think of Grandma Dee.

Dee is wearing bright clothes which symbolises her African descent. Maggie tried to save Dee when their house was burned. In the process, Maggie burned herself.

The man is short and stocky. hair is all over his head a foot long and hanging from his chin like a kinky mule tail.
