    An abstract noun is a noun you can NOT touch. This is the simplest way to think about it. In this sentence, cleverness and courage are both things. We know this because great is an adjective that describes them. Adjectives only describe nouns. Also, the sentence does not say that Odysseus IS clever. It says he displays or HAS cleverness. You can only have or possess nouns.
