The purpose of this scene was to make the character Abigail feel more humanistic, the scene portrays her as a good person with human feelings rather than an antagonist. The scence also potrays the character Proctor as a bad person due to the recollection of the sinful relationship he had with Abigail.

Miller deleted the scene from the play because he wants the readers to keep on admiring Proctor and regarding Abigail as a dangerous individual.
