Traditional Authorities are respected and they play an important role in South Africa. In the province of Kwazulu Natal, Traditional Rulers are seen by their communities as leaders and symbols of unity in the community. The constitution recognises Traditional rulers in terms of section 211 of the 1996 constitution.

Traditional Rulers over the years from the precolonial society were known as the custodian of people' s culture and traditions and were also involved in government.
