The saying, 'Mother is Supreme', came from Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart. This literature focuses on Africa before the white people arrived. It focused mainly on the Ibo society in terms of their proverbs, myths, culture, and most especially the role of women.

In this story, women were very much respected and had important roles in the society. They paint their houses called egwugwu. In fact, a character in that story who plays the wife of the first man of the Ibo society was treated with respect. During their wine ceremony, all men did not drink their wine unless the wife arrives. Thus, the saying, 'Mother is Supreme', is portraying that the roles of women in the Ibo society is supreme.
