After the Times reported the Titanic to have sunk, Vice President Philip Franklin was asked by reporters to confirm if the rumors were true and he was unsure of what to say because he previously said the Titanic was unsinkable so his response was that the large ship was unsinkable.

He later backtracked on further enquiry and said that he made his comments based on expert opinion about the safety and infallibility of the Titanic.
