Finding out the mood of an excerpt is partially a subjective activity that should be accompanied by arguments supporting one's opinion.

So, to me, the mood is moderately sad and surprised: it is sad because it treats death (a young person dying), but it is not overly sad because it also describes the facts rather than focusing on the sadness.

The surprise aspect of the mood comes from mentioning that she had only been sick for a few days - he death was not expected.
