    The statements:

Television is reactive, requiring no skill or thinking.

    1) Even if you don't do anything, television will continue playing (unlike video games for example!

    2) You don't need to necessarily understand the context of the information that's presented to you: you can be informed about a war somewhere without having to understand the causes for it and the power dynamics in the war.

Television viewing takes away from study and reading time.

    1) On a given day, if you watch TV for an hour and you forget you wanted to study: it took away this hour from the time when you could have studied

    2) Television provides an easy distraction, so it's easy to watch it, and harder to stop and to do unpleasant chores, such as studying for a hard test
