T he root/base of the word unprotected is 'protect.' The 'un' is a prefix and the 'ed' is a suffix.

Protect. Un is the prefix meaning "the opposite of", or "not"; ed is the suffix meaning "in the past". Therefore, unprotected means--did not protect.
