Read this appeal:

Meat today is filled with toxins, and cows are treated poorly. In the past, cows had a rather easy life on the farm. Nowadays, cattle are shoved into cramped holding pens and pumped full of dangerous chemicals. The meat doesn't taste as good as it used to, either.

Who would be the most appropriate audience for this appeal?

A. An elderly neighbor

B. A teenager

C. A registered nurse

D. A five-year-old child

I would say that the best answer is A. An elderly neighbor.

The appeal frequently refers to the past with such phrases as "in the past" or "nowadays". The other options would not be as effective as an elderly neighbor would be. An elderly person would have a better sense of what the meat "used to" taste like and how things were back in the day. Using references to time may incite a feeling of nostalgia in older audiences and make people want a return to the old days.
