In such a practice, the humans (especially laborers) were brutally exploited and oppressed for economic gain and owned as a commodity by the owner who possessed all the rights to afflict and suppress them and their rights inhumanly. Thus, 'slavery' would be described as the system of owning a person (or many) by force and power.
