Nation states acquire status as independent, sovereign nations when they are recognized by other nation states. For example, when Palestine has been recognized as a nation state despite its dismemberment by Israel, its' government establishes itself as a key part of the ephemeral peace accords and deserves to be treated with respect by Israel with an equal voice in the relations between the two countries.
