The theme that can be found in the story is: Nature is a powerful force and should be given great respect.

"To Build A Fire" is about a reckless journey of a man to reach a certain destination past the snowy mountains taking the Yukon trail. It talks about the perils that he has experienced through his journey, and him disregarding the warnings that he is not supposed to be travelling in that kind of weather.

The character became a witness of the power of nature, because the story ends with him dying alone in the blizzard.
