The type of monster that would best fit into the time period before Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is D. a disfigured creature that lives in the dark part of the forest. Option A is too far into the future for Mary Shelley and would more likely fit our time period, so would option C. A bank robber who lives in a quiet neighbourhood is not really a monster and would likely still fit our own time period. The reason a disfigured creature would work is because that time period feared anyone who did not look "normal" must be a creature formed by evil and was perhaps the devil. People did not trust dark forests and feared that only bad would come to them for entering a forest.
