    Elizabeth Proctor is recognized in the book as someone who always tells the truth. However, she decides to lie about her husband's affair. The irony lies in the fact that Elizabeth only told the lie in order to protect Proctor, but it is this lie that ends up condemning him. When Elizabeth lies, she is unaware of the fact that Proctor already confessed, and by lying, she is only incriminating the two of them.
