In the story, "A Clean Well-Lighted Place" by Hemingway, what is it, besides insomnia that makes the older waiter reluctant to go to bed?     The older waiter is reluctant due to he is living with the guilt or shame of committing something wrong when he was younger. The refrain means that the waiter does not believe in God and is not so religious. They are both lonely people so that the older waiter understands the need for the café. The café represents them both.
