Read the passage below from an essay on "The Theme of Transformation in The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle" and answer the question.

Charlotte's transformation is marked by her realization of Jaggery's true nature. As Charlotte herself says, "It was I-despite clear warnings-who had refused to see Captain Jaggery as the villainous man he was ..." This realization is the first step in Charlotte's transformation from someone who can't see past appearances, to someone who can.
