ohn Proctor. The Crucible was Miller's response to the Red Scare and the McCarthy trials of the 1950s; however, the play itself focuses on the inconsistency of the Witch Trials. It is centered around three girls who were accused of being witches after they are found dancing around in the woods trying to cast spells.
