What did the Missouri Compromise propose, and what was the result?

Missouri would be admitted to the union as a slave state & maine as a free state. Resulting from the Missouri Compromise was a division of territory west of that state being divided north & south between possible slave & free states. Also, to keep a balance of slave & free states in congress. Maine was admitted as a free state at the same time Missouri became a slave state.
