Lines 8-9 contribute to the overall meaning of the poem it is saying that when we hear the bells ringing that someone has died, we don't need to ask who it is. We are all connected somehow "No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; ". (Donne). Since we are part of a whole it means that a part of us died as well because we are all connected to each other.
