How would you describe Atticus's universe of obligation? B) How can Atticus respect both his racist neighbors, such as Mrs. Dubose, and the black man he will defend in court, Tom Robinson?

    A) From the beginning of the story, the reader can tell that Atticus was chosen by the authorities of Maycomb to represent a black poor man, Tom Robinson, at a trial. He did so because although he knew he was not going to win the case, he had the obligation to represent him in order to get an opportunity to an important job.

    B) Since Atticus was not a prejudiced man, he accepted and understood all opinions about the trial of Tom Robinson. He was described as a respectful man throughout the story.
