The writer wants to conceal the subject's identity (Jameson). He knows who dropped it, he knows how it broke (it was dropped), and he knows where through inference (parents on vacation). Hiding the doer's/subject's identity is one of the basic uses of the passive voice. Other reasons could be purposely keeping the drama low (ironic effect, anticlimax; more elaborate would be its use to heighten dramatic climax, for instance through seeming out of place for the intensity of what is being described, as it makes one question the state og the narrator: what reasons can he have to deviate so drastically / dramatically from expected literary craftmanship.
