    I think that the symbolism of the event is A. Colin's mother loved roses. When he plants one, he makes a connection with her.

    The story is "The Secret Garden". Colin's mother died in the garden. She fell from the tree when she was pregnant with him. The garden was then walled by Colin's father because he hated the place that his wife loved so much and that caused her death.

    When Colin found out his mother loved the garden that she entrusted it to a servant to maintain, he declared the garden as his and planted the rose to symbolize ownership.
