The story of How Jakhals Fed Oom Leeuw was told by Outa Karel, a native African to the Van der Merwe family. The story contains the popular African tale of how a jackal outwits and kills the king of the jungle, the lion.

Jackal has first outwitted the Uncle Lion into giving him meat from the sheep, then again "intentionally" killed him by offering to pull him up to share his meal. No wonder jackals are considered cunning and clever even to this day. Uncle Lion was on a mission to repay Jackal for fooling him by offering to take him hunting, but instead he ended up being killed by Jackal.

After the lion fell from the cliff, since it wasn't possible to get him up, he offered to share the lamb chops into the lion's mouth. But rather than meat alone, he threw "red-hot stone out of the fire and wrapped a big piece of fat round it". This immediately killed the lion, leading the Jackal to sing praises about his own cunning act. The song includes phrases such as "who is stronger than the King of Beastland", "eats the fat-tailed sheep while the King lies dying" etc which all implies that he has absolutely no remorse for killing the lion.
