I think an example of irony in this book was in Chapter 5 when Gatsby invites Daisy to his mansion to show off his newly formed wealth, thinking it would impress her and make her fall in love with him again, The irony is that he will never be apart of her circle because he was not born into wealth, what she needed was someone with money AND social standing.
