Friendless and lonely people may become bitter or socially isolated, the complete opposite may be true for others. They may try their hardest to pretend they aren't lonely while trying to become overly involved in people's lives.

Curley's wife is the most lonely person in Of Mice and Men. She's the only woman on the ranch and her husband has forbidden anyone from talking to her. She spends her time trying to flirt with any farm hand that will pay attention to her. Curley's wife is not responsible for her loneliness, as she is controlled by a neglectful husband. It was not acceptable to divorce in this time period, which meant she could not leave.
