Read the passage and then answer the question that follows:

Everyone can agree that literacy is important. Most of my life I have spent volunteering for libraries and organizations that fight for adult literacy in deserving communities with people who need this skill to care for their loving families. There is no doubt that these movements cost money-money that can be used for many other purposes, including community cleanup, outreach, and recreation. But the fact is that without basic literacy in our neighborhoods, that money will be worthless. Which of the following does the sentence in bold use?

The bold sentence is:

deserving communities with people who need this skill to care for their loving families.

A) Ethos: An appeal to ethics

B) Pathos: An appeal to emotion

C) Logos: An appeal to logic

Pathos because it engages in the readers emotions. It cannot be Ethos because it does not show how the narrator's or writer's are a good character. It is not Claim or Counterclaim because it is not the main argument or the opposing argument. It is not Logos because it doesn't appeal to reason, common sense, general knowledge, or scientific research. So it has to be B) Pathos.
