    George Orwell's Animal Farm is an allegory for the Russian Revolution. In the novel, a group of animals rebels against their human farmer. The animals that assume the most power and authority after the Rebellion are the pigs. The characters of the two main pigs, Napoleon and Snowball, were based on Josef Stalin and Leon Trotsky. Napoleon is the dictator of the farm, just like Stalin was the dictator after the Russian Revolution. Although the animals rebelled against their farmer so as to gain freedom, the pigs begin to control their lives, and they are even less free than before. Napoleon uses his power for the wrong purposes, and is even ready to kill other animals. The idea of the novel is, therefore, that violent revolutions which overthrow totalitarian regimes often become totalitarian themselves.
