The pilot's characteristics and his main reasons for obeying the rules of the EDS (in three sentences) are the following:

Barton, the pilot in "The Cold Equations", by Tom Goldwin, is really faithful to his job and lives by the logic of the cold equations, even if it requires the death of another being. As a commited pilot, his responsibility is to preserve the mission, that is to say, to land safely at destination, and it is known that by law, all EDS stowaways (in this case Marilyn) will be jettisoned because such vessels contain only the necessary fuel to carry the cargo and the pilot. Carrying Marilyn with him (adding extra weight to the EDS) would've meant to fail the mission and die in space with her; so the only thing that saved him from his moral conflict (letting her die so young) was to stick to the law and act upon it, no matter the consequences.
