King Henry II of England, believed that Thomas Beckett would be a good choice for his new role because between the king and Beckett there was a friendly relationship, being Beckett first guardian of still prince and then hunting partner. What was intended to be royalty and above all King Henry II, was to the order of priests to the civil authorities at the time of the ecclesiastics, wanting to be the sovereign king of the kingdom as well as the church, without the intervention of the Archbishop, since this also depended on naming the heir to the throne.

Being named Archbishop, King Henry II believed that he was the right person to defend their interests.
