hich best describes one theme of both "A Man Said to the Universe" and "Sympathy"? The environment is indifferent to the individual. The individual is more powerful than the environment. An individual's place in the world is determined by his or her environment. An individual affects society, just as a society influences individuals.

    "A Man Said to the Universe" is a poem about the conversation of a man with the universe, and how he looks for recognition from the universe.

    "Sympathy" describes how life was for black men during the 1800's, and in here we find a metaphor that speaks about a caged bird that wants to escape.

    These two texts have a theme in common which is "An individual's place in the world is determined by his or her environment." We arrive to this conclusion because in the two texts individuals are questioning and wanting to challenge and change their place or position in the world or universe.
