    Lets start with the 2nd flight.

    Number of seats on the 2nd plane: X

    Number of seats on the 1st plane : X+85

    Number of seats on the 3rd plane: X-51

    Total number of seats = 436.

    436 = (x) + (x+85) + (x-51)

    436 = 3x+34

    436-34=3x

    402=3x

    402/3=x = 134 - on 2nd plane.

    134+85 = 219 on 1st plane.

    134-51 = 83 on the 3rd plane.

    Quick Check

    134+219+83 = 436

    436=436! So, our answer is correct!
