    Sigmund Freud emphasized the importance of the unconscious mind, and an assumption of Freudian theory is that the unconscious mind governs behavior more than others suspect. His goal is to make the unconscious, conscious. Freud's impact was to change the way society thought about and dealt with different mental illness. Mental illness use to be thought to come from some kind of deterioration or disease of the brain.
