A tragedy is a horrific happening, a bad problem, like a car wreck or a fire. One example would be when the girl dies in Bridge to Teribithea, when she hits her head and drowns.

A tragedy is an event causing great suffering, destruction, and distress, such as a serious accident, crime, or natural catastrophe. A real life tragedy would be someone passing away in a car accident, or if you wanted to take that a step further, someone being murdered. A good example of this in the world of literature would be "Romeo and Juliet" these two star cross lovers end up killing themselves because they can't be together. Tragic
