The term "hero" has a series of implications that transcend the role of "protagonist" of the novel. The hero of the medieval world is a model of those values that society understands as positive. The hero potentially embodies virtues to which men aspire at every moment. The link between heroic values and social values is essential to understand the transformation that occurs when arriving at the contemporary era. For a hero to show, society must have a degree of cohesion enough to have recognized and common values. Without values there is no hero. The hero is always a proposal, an embodiment of ideals. The status of hero had as much of his actions as of the value that others grant him those actions. This allows the heroic dimension to vary in each given historical situation of the prevailing values. Regardless of the degree of real presence of the virtues in a society, it must have a goal towards which it is directed or towards which it can be directed.
