A survey of 150 human resource and other managers from the nation's largest companies by OfficeTeam, a temporary services firm, shows that 76 percent won't hire job candidates who have one or two typos in their resumes.

And 45 percent said it would take only one typo to eliminate the candidate.

"Spelling errors and other mistakes ... give the impression you are not detail-oriented or that you lack a genuine interest in the position," said Diane Domeyer, OfficeTeam's executive director.

Such errors also might give the impression that you are sloppy or illiterate. So take time to proofread your resume and the cover letter before sending them out.

    Write when you get words

I wrote recently that newly hired Generation Xers reportedly want to be greeted by their managers in this way: "We value your hard work as an individual, as well as your creativity and innovation."

Ever the skeptic, I asked anyone hearing a manager utter those words to contact me. Several people did. Here's one of them: "I received a positive, welcoming message the day I started at the job I now hold, working as an administrative assistant for a large company," a reader said.
