When I was down beside the sea

    The line,'a wooden spade they gave to me to dig the sandy shore' clearly states that the speaker was given a digging tool. It is mentioned that they gave him the spade 'to dig' the sandy shore. The words 'to dig' signifies that the speaker didn't yet dig the holes. So it definitely cannot be option C. Apart from that, option A and B also doesn't match the idea.
