Root Observation Report:

1. Observe a root using a hand lens. Describe what you see. (Use complete sentences.)

2. Draw one of the roots the same size and shape as you see in the hand lens.

3. Label all the outside parts of the root.

4. Label the three regions of the root.

5. Observe a root and root hairs using a microscope if you have one available. Describe what you see. (Use complete sentences.)

Are the root hairs nearer the seed end or tip end of the root?

6. Did you notice that the root hair cells were really long, hollow tubes? Root hairs have very thin walls. Water and minerals can easily pass through them to go to the stems and leaves. Using complete sentences, explain why you think roots have so many root hairs.
