A robot is an electromechanical device capable of performing work in an autonomous or pre-programmed manner. Robots are commonly used to perform tasks in poorly lit places, or to perform tasks that are dirty or dangerous to humans. Industrial robots used on production lines are the most common form of robot, a situation that is changing recently with the popularization of commercial floor cleaner and lawn mower robots. Other applications are: toxic waste treatment, underwater and space exploration, surgery, mining, search and rescue, and location of landmines. Robots also appear in the areas of entertainment and home chores.
