In "Exhalation", by Ted Chiang, what society initially believes about memory, is that it is written and stored on golden pages in the brain.

The narrator, describes a world, with living creatures that are made of mechanical parts. With brains made of gold leaves, and air tubules. The narrator is a student of Anatomy. The question of memory is one of the unsolved mysteries of Anatomy. They know little about the brain because brains are extremely delicate, so they don't know how memory is stored. "For decades, the prevailing theory of memory was that all the person's experiencies were engraved on sheets of gold foil."
