The overall tone of John Dryden’s Annus Mirabilis is patriotic. It is a tribute to the great city of London and its people. Dryden expresses pride in the glorious victory of the British navy over the Dutch in the first half of the poem. In the second half of the poem, the tone changes to one of encouragement. He urges the people of London to leave the past behind and to work toward making London into one of the greatest cities in the world. He is also hopeful about better times ahead, as can be seen in the following lines quoted from the poem:

Already we have conquer'd half the war,

And the less dangerous part is left behind:

Our trouble now is but to make them dare,

And not so great to vanquish as to find.
