Nike wanted to sponsor Mr Kaepernick because of his story of protest and all of the attention he was getting. They knew there would be some backlash but it still created a ton of buzz for the company and while it many have annoyed some of their consumers who did not like kaepernick taking a knee, the people who did support him gained a lot of respect for Nike.

Because brands want influncers to get bigger like if james charles has a new caot the brand is gonna want him to sponser it for more profit.
