The protagonist's main idea is to be able to express herself as the American as she lives in the United States of America. "When I was done, I read over my words, and my eyes filled. I finally sounded like myself in English!". She is also interested in identifying the ancestral connections and roots which she had shared. She had felt strong connections toward her mother. Her mother is very supportive of her as given here ""Go away," I wailed, but we both knew I was glad she was there, and I needed only a moment's protest to save face before opening that door."
