    One example of verbal irony can be seen when Montresor first sees Fortunato at the carnival and says "My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met," (Poe 1). This statement is a type of verbal irony because Fortunato is not actually luckily met by Montressor, whose intentions are to murder Fortunato.
