How does this contribute to Beowulf's characterization as a hero?

"The liege-kinsman worthy

Of Higelac minded his speech of the evening,

Stood he up straight and stoutly did seize him.

His fingers crackled; the giant was outward,

The earl stepped farther."

This contributes to beowulfs characterization as a hero, because "The liege" mind his speech and they are kinsman worthy of Higelac, which would lead me to believe they have the up most respect for Beowulf.
