The antagonist conatins the opposite force in the story, bringing the protagonist the conflict. The antagonist can be tangible, another human, an animal, or an abstract idea, for example, fear, a feeling, an impediment or something basically the portagonist has to struggle with. In consequence, the answer is To bring conflict to the protagonist which in the development of the story it could be solved, so this is not necessarily the main role of the antagonist. In addition, the lenght of the conflict its extension or whether it turns into a more interesting story or not, do not depend on the antagonist either.
