    The answer was Protestantism or letter c. Before she ascended to the throne, the ruler at the time was Queen Mary I who was devout Catholic and was determined to eradicate the Protestant faith in England. She also intended to Mary Prince Phillip of Spain and this resulted in deep resentment among Englishmen. When she died, Elizabeth succeeded her on the throne on November 7, 1558.
